On July 11th, as part of the UNDP-UNICEF STEM4ALL initiative, we hosted a virtual master class for university women enrolled in ICT and STEM studies. This event was held in celebration of World Youth Skills Day, which emphasizes the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and personal development. The theme for this year, “Youth Skills for Peace and Development,” perfectly aligned with our mission to foster gender equality and empower women in STEM.
The workshop was led by Dr. Amina Mirsakiyeva, a member of the STEMinists Network and Data Scientist at NDT Global in Germany. Dr. Mirsakiyeva, originally from Kazakhstan, has an impressive background in Chemical Engineering and Material Physics, holding a PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. She is a dedicated member of the STEMinists network and shared her valuable experiences and insights during the workshop. Dr. Mirsakiyeva shared her experience securing a job in the STEM field, emphasizing the importance of gender equality. She provided practical advice for women on skills building, finding information and mentors, and preparing for job interviews.
Participants also learned how to write an effective CV tailored for STEM job applications. Using two real examples of CVs from audience participants, Dr. Mirsakiyeva demonstrated best practices and common pitfalls in CV writing.
