In today’s episode, guest host Haley Powers from UNICEF, speaks with Alex Tyers-Chowdhury, a Gender and Technology specialist with UNICEF, and Product and Partnerships Lead for Oky, an innovative period tracker app for adolescent girls. The app and website were created for - and with input from - girls to support menstrual health and hygiene in localized contexts and languages, following Alex’s work creating digital solutions for women and girls across Africa, Asia and Central America. Both an informative knowledge-building platform, and an entry point into the digital world, Oky helps girls learn to care for themselves and their bodies, and provides a pathway to digital literacy and engagement in STEM sectors, from the initial steps of coding to the final touches or graphic design. Alex, a digital inclusion specialist who focuses on the gender digital divide and digital literacy for girls, sat down with Haley to share more about what exactly Oky is - and what it aims to be.
