We are delighted to invite you to our next virtual event, “Women in STEM leading climate action in Europe and Central Asia,” organized by STEM4ALL and the Gender Team at the Istanbul Regional Hub. Please save the date and time: Tuesday, March 8 from 14:00 – 15:20 Istanbul time. The interactive event will:
- Highlight the contributions of four women in STEM from the Europe and Central Asia region on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response.
- Inspire and advise women and girls in STEM on pursuing and advancing in STEM careers, especially in sustainability and climate action.
- Demonstrate the need for an ecosystem (society, private sector, government, educators) and systems approach in STEM fields for a sustainable future.
Speakers:
Senida Dzajic-Rghei is a Civil Engineer with a Master degree in the department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering.
She has been involved in numerous domestic and international projects working as a project manager, team leader, consultant, water/wastewater engineer and GIS specialist. Projects included flood risk management, flood risk protection, protection and management of water resources, planning and designs of water supply systems, sewage systems, wastewater treatment plants, river training, hydraulic modelling, and GIS database development.
She has long term experience in technical engineering, as well as legal, financial and institutional aspects of water and environmental management.
Burcu Karaca is the co-founder of BPREG Inc. in Turkey which is committed to developing novel nature-based composite materials and technologies (through Imece, a partner of UNDP). She has 10+ years of expertise in natural fiber composites and textile structures. |She has completed her Ph.D. thesis on the production and characterization of aligned flax fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite material. She is a researcher at Ege University Textile Engineering Department. She is also one of the co-founders of "Döngü Cooperative" a for-profit cooperative to revive flax/hemp cultivation in Turkey which ended 40 years ago. Flax and hemp are major raw materials for BPREG.
Olga Malinkiewicz is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Saule Technologies. She is managing a team of 20 scientists from 11 countries working on the construction of the globally unique prototype production line for inkjet printed perovskite solar cells. She graduated from the Technical University of Catalonia in 2010 (MSc Photonics). In 2017 she obtained her PhD from the Institute of Molecular Science, University of Valencia at the group of Dr. Henk Bolink, with a thesis on low cost, efficient hybrid solar cells. Olga developed a novel perovskite cell architecture allowing fabrication of the efficient perovskite cells on PET, an achievement for which she was awarded the Photonics21 Student Innovation award in a competition organised by the European Commission in 2014.
Vera Veronova, an ecologist by training, is a professional in the field of ecological tourism. She is Executive Director of a national NGO, the Kazakhstan Association of Biodiversity Conservation (ACBK), which she has set up over the last ten years. ACBK is the largest conservation NGO in the country, focusing on wildlife conservation based on science and modern technologies. ACBK is also a partner of BirdLife in Kazakhstan. She has been extensively involved in capacity building events on climate change with the UNDP Climate Portfolio in Kazakhstan.
